Premier Jay Weatherill opens Westfield Marion fresh food precinct

Premier Jay Weatherill today opened Westfield Marion’s highly anticipated new fresh food mall and eatery.

The redevelopment at Westfield Marion, which is jointly owned by Scentre Group and Australian Prime Property Fund Retail, is a significant milestone in the Group’s $500 million South Australian future development pipeline. It is anticipated these works will create up to 2,600 jobs in construction and retail on completion.

ALDI supermarket opened its doors in the bright, industrial-style precinct alongside 14 new and returning speciality retailers, including new Asian grocer Lau Peking; the first store in South Australia, popular Spanish restaurant Panacea and French patisserie La Madeleine. Springfield Butcher, The Cheesemonger and Manuel’s Seafood revealed new fit outs and welcomed queues of local patrons.

Scentre Group COO Greg Miles said: “Today we welcome shoppers to the new fresh food mall and eatery which is now home to top local operators offering a variety of quality produce. This is a fitting new addition to Adelaide’s largest centre and the first step in our commitment to continue the redevelopment of Westfield centres in South Australia.

“Our plan is to invest around $500 million into our three Westfield centres over the next three years. Plans include major extensions at Tea Tree Plaza and Marion, which will introduce new local and international mini-majors, additional specialty stores as well as new restaurant and lifestyle entertainment precincts. A smaller project at West Lakes is also planned, following the $100m project completed in 2014.”

Premier Jay Weatherill said: “Besides being an attractive addition to the entire Marion complex, one of the best things about this new food precinct is that it’s a job creator.

“It created 140 jobs during the construction phase and about 100 ongoing ones in the shops themselves. We’ll also see further jobs thanks to Scentre Group’s plans for further extensions at their Westfield centres in Adelaide.

“It has been terrific to visit Marion and to see – for myself – how this famous shopping centre is expanding, moving with the times and serving the people of Adelaide’s south.

“On behalf of the State Government, I commend Scentre Group and its partners for being bold and bringing this project to fruition.”

From 3-7 August, shoppers are invited to enjoy over 25 in-centre events with Westfield Marion Fresh Food Ambassadors Jessie Spiby, Bree May, Laura Cassai and Kris Lloyd in celebration of the new precinct launch.
