Westfield and Commerz Real, owners of the 1.6 billion Westfield London, today announced the first signings in what will ultimately be a collection of over 50 food operators within the development.

Interest in the variety of food offering within the project has been exceptional with most of the food units now either leased or at very advanced stages of negotiation ahead of the opening for Christmas 2008.

Keith Mabbett, Leasing Director for Westfield London, said: “The mix of outlets will range from high end cafes and restaurants through to market style gourmet food kiosks, family restaurants and coffee shops.”

Leading, national and international food operators taking a unit within the development are: Tibits, Leon, Delaziz, Wahaca, The Real Greek, Wagamama and Esca.

These are niche operators, restricting their presence to the centre of the Capital or to London suburbs. The decision to open branches in Westfield London is testament to the projects revolutionary approach and the recognition of the importance of quality dining within a retail development.

All outlets will be located on the Southern Terrace, an entirely pedestrianised street of bars and restaurants within Westfield London. Comprising 17 lifestyle eateries, this area will offer an exciting mix of international cuisines catering to an eclectic range of tastes.

The entertainment offer in the centre will be complemented by a 14-screen Cinema de Lux to be operated by National Amusements from the US.

Michael Gutman, Managing Director of Westfield UK & Europe, said: “Westfield has become a specialist at the combination of retail, dining leisure and entertainment in a series of high end malls around the world including Century City in Los Angeles, San Francisco Centre in downtown San Francisco, Bondi Junction in Sydney and shortly to commence at the base of the soon to be rebuilt World Trade centre in New York.”

Notes to Editors:

Tibits: Hugely popular in its native Switzerland, this vegetarian and child-friendly self-service restaurant is now coming to Westfield London. Giant plates of salad that are paid for by weight will be available alongside homemade sandwiches, vitamin-packed juices and fresh shakes.

Leon: Set up in 2003 by celebrity chef Allegra McEvedy, Leon aims to give London a green and healthy makeover. The nutritious and delicious dishes on offer include superfood salads and wheat-free chocolate brownies, as well as roasted sweet potato falafels (there’s no deepfat frying at Leon and no chips) and Moroccan harira.

Leon recently beat off competition from restaurants all over Europe to win the coveted Golden Palm trophy presented annually to the hottest foodservice concept.

Delaziz: Following in the successful footsteps of its sister branches in Fulham and Swiss Cottage, this acclaimed Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and North African deli, bakery and brasserie will be a real draw for food lovers.

Wahaca: Voted Best Brunch by Tatlers 2008 Restaurant Guide, Wahacas respect for quality ingredients, passion for vibrant, honest food and the pleasure of sharing with others will bring the spirit of Mexican market eating to West London.

The Real Greek: Having done so much to overturn stereotypes of Hellenic cooking, The Real Greek is the modern way to enjoy healthy Mediterranean cooking in a relaxed environment.

Wagamama: With a concept modelled on the ramen shops popular in Japan for over two hundred years, Wagamama is the most successful chain of award-winning Asian inspired noodle restaurants in the UK.

Esca: A deli, patisserie and caf, Esca is a gourmands paradise with delicious, daily changing meals available to eat in or take away. Those in the Clapham area of London have been sharing tables, delicious food and conversation in this buzzy environment for years. Now customers at Westfield London will also be able to enjoy Esca’s fabulous cakes, fresh juices, hot drinks and a treasure trove of unusual produce.
