Donation part of shopping center owners effort to aid/support San Diego community
SAN DIEGO, Calif. Rapidly mobilizing to support the hundreds of thousands of San Diego County residents affected by ongoing wildfires, Westfield today pledged $100,000 in emergency aid to the American Red Cross of San Diego.
The entire Westfield family has been touched by this tragedy. We are part of this community and will do whatever we can to help, said Ken Wong, Westfield Group President of U.S. Operations. We are currently working with local law enforcement, public safety and emergency service organizations to serve as a resource — providing staging areas for first responders at several of our centers.
On Monday, as evacuees were being directed to Qualcomm Stadium, the shopping center owner arranged for delivery of 5,000 bottles of water to evacuees.
While Westfield North County (272 E. Via Rancho Parkway in Escondido) remains closed today, the centers parking facilities are still being used as a staging area for emergency personnel. Westfield Plaza Camino Real (2525 El Camino Real in Carlsbad) served as an evacuation center yesterday and remains a staging area for emergency responders, including FEMA today. Westfield Parkway in El Cajon is serving as a temporary shelter for hundreds of livestock. All other Westfield centers in San Diego County remain open today (Westfield Plaza Bonita, Parkway, Mission Valley, Horton Plaza, UTC and Plaza Camino Real) so area residents may purchase needed goods.
Some stores may be closed due to staffing shortages and air quality concerns. As appropriate, modified center hours will be announced throughout the week.
In the hours and days ahead, Westfield will be continuing its outreach to the communities we serve, added Wong.
