Westfield launches shopping centre leasing expo

Westfield is launching a unique leasing expo to show-case fourmajor shopping centre expansion and redevelopment projects whichwill include more than 500 opportunities for new or expandingretail businesses.

It is the first time an Australian shopping centre company haspackaged a portfolio of blue-chip shopping centre redevelopmentsand offered them in one leasing expo which will open in Sydney onTuesday June 9 and travel to Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

Westfield Managing Director Australia Steven Lowy said each ofthe redevelopments will feature the integration of shopping andentertainment, incorporating the latest in high tech multi screencinemas within lifestyle and dining precincts.

“These entertainment precincts are designed to enhance theshopping experience to attract the broadest range of customers,” MrLowy said. “It is a concept that we designed into the $200 millionredevelopment of Marion Shoppingtown in Adelaide which opened latelast year and has proved a great success with shoppers.”

The four properties featured in the leasing expo are:

Westfield Shoppingtown Chatswood in Sydney, which is acombination CBD/ suburban regional shopping centre servicingSydney’s affluent North Shore. Chatswood Shoppingtown will increasefrom around 50,000 square metres to around 77,000 square metres ofretail space. On completion in late 1999-early 2000 the centre willfeature a new Grace Bros (opening August this year), a new Colessupermarket and around 285 specialty stores to complement RebelSports, Target, Toys R Us and Franklins Fresh supermarket. Thecentre will also feature a new state-of-the-art six screen HoytsCinemax with stadium seating and wide-screen viewing.

Westfield Shoppingtown Chermside in Brisbane, which isbeing redesigned as the major shopping destination on Brisbane’snorthside, will increase from around 39,000 square metres to around70,000 square metres. On completion the centre will feature anupgraded Myer department store, a relocated Target and new Kmartdiscount department stores, two new format, full-line supermarkets- Bi Lo Mega Frrresh and Coles, approximately 200 specialty storesand a Birch Carroll and Coyle 16 screen Megaplex..

Westfield Shoppingtown Carousel, already one of Perth’stop shopping centres, will expand from 47,600 square metres toaround 76,000 square metres. On completion, the centre will featurenew Woolworths and Coles supermarkets, a new Kmart andapproximately 200 specialty stores to complement the existingTarget and Myer stores. Carousel will also include a new 16 screenHoyts Cinemax.

Westfield Shoppingtown Southland in Melbourne, which isalready under construction, will be span both sides of the NepeanHighway connected by a two-level retail mall and vehicle bridge.The new Southland, at around 131,000 square metres, will beAustralia’s second largest shopping centre and feature a new 16screen Village Megaplex. The centre will also have two newdepartment stores, David Jones and Myer and new Kmart and Colesstores together with the existing Safeway, Franklins, Target, Big Wand Harris Scarfe outlets, plus around 320 speciality stores.

Mr Lowy said the leasing expos were a two-way opportunity.

“They are an opportunity for retailers we already have arelationship with to talk with us about expanding into new centresor new States,” he said, “plus its a chance for us to talk withpeople who are not represented in Westfield centres – particularlypeople who have new retail formats to discuss and new ideas topromote.

“For Westfield, it’s an opportunity to make sure that we cancontinue to offer shoppers the most up-to-date shopping centreswith the best mix of retailers and the widest choice of productsand services.”

At functions in each city Westfield will showcase theredevelopments with scale models, artists’ impressions and floorplans which will be exhibited while leasing staff are on hand fordiscussions with retailers.

“The expos will also be a chance for us to introduce newretailers to our accredited retail skills training program, whichoperates twice a year in every Westfield Shoppingtown, and to ourretail consultancy services and overseas study tours.

“So we are not only able to offer a unique range of leasingopportunities in our redevelopments, but a unique range of retailersupport services as well.”
