We want to be the place for talent to thrive and are pleased that people are choosing to build enduring careers with us.
Azfar Khan, Risk & Security Manager at Westfield Whitford City, started his career with us as a casual security officer 13 years ago. We asked Azfar to share his journey with us as we acknowledge 2025 International Security Officers’ Day.
I have been working across Westfield destinations since 2012, beginning my journey as a security officer through a security partner.
During this time, I gained valuable experience across several Sydney destinations, including Westfield Chatswood, Westfield Hurstville, Westfield Burwood, and later Westfield Warringah Mall.
In 2013, I relocated to Perth and had the opportunity to continue my journey within Westfield destinations, joining Westfield Carousel as a night security officer.
My career progressed gradually, and I was promoted to Security Supervisor, a role I performed across multiple destinations in WA.
Each destination presented its own challenges and learning opportunities, allowing me to develop a comprehensive understanding of centre operations, customer engagement, and risk management in diverse settings.
I also had the privilege of growing and working alongside some exceptional leaders over the years.
Then, in 2019, I was appointed Risk and Security Supervisor at Westfield Carousel. At this time, I embraced formal education to enhance my individual growth within the security sector and completed a Diploma in Security and Risk Management.
I was soon promoted to Risk and Security Manager at Westfield Innaloo, and then transitioned into my current role at Westfield Whitford City.
In my new role I was offered professional development opportunities within Scentre Group, including our leadership development programs that contribute to enhancing individual growth and improving team performance.
Scentre Group's culture to support people realise their full potential meant that I was able to continue my formal education. I used our flexible working and study leave benefits to help me balance my work, study and home life while I attained a bachelor’s degree in Counter Terrorism and Security Intelligence.
This has further strengthened my capabilities and allows me to contribute more effectively to our security and risk functions.
Ultimately, this demonstrates how our culture to be the place where people thrive has a positive impact on the overall experience of all stakeholders, whether they are visiting or working within our Westfield destinations.
This year I was thrilled to welcome a newborn into my family. Once again our approach of recognising the whole person meant that I was able to present for this important moment at home, supporting my partner and enjoying secondary carers’ leave with my child.
My journey reflects not only my long-standing dedication to the business but also Scentre Group’s genuine commitment to its people both in and outside the workplace.
