As a member of our Reconciliation Action Plan working group, Jamie Hogg, Marketing Executive at Westfield Knox, completed Scentre Group’s first secondment through Jawun earlier this year.
Jawun is an innovative not-for-profit that increases the capacity of Indigenous leaders, organisations and communities to achieve their own development goals. They facilitate long-term engagement, through partnerships with corporate, government and Indigenous Australia, to achieve locally driven aspirations.
Jamie said: “I’m a descendant of the Palawa people in Tasmania and learning more about that history has been a big passion of mine.
“I put myself forward to join the Reconciliation Action Plan working group as another way for me to build connection, so when I was offered the opportunity to complete the secondment it was really exciting as it is a completely immersive experience.
“It was also fabulous for my professional development – and I got to learn so much while I was working with the Gujaga Foundation in La Perouse.
“To begin the secondment, I spent three days being inducted. This included cultural awareness training, a Dharawal language workshop, cultural tours, a community boxing class and introductions to a wide range of Indigenous Organisations throughout the region.
“Having spent this time immersed in the La Perouse community I have a much deeper understanding of the history and culture. It was also wonderful to meet so many new people.
“The Gujaga Foundation works in the Dharawal cultural space.
“Their purpose is to support the La Perouse Aboriginal community by reviving, developing and passing down Dharawal language and culture. They also provide further services to the wider Coastal Sydney and Illawara region through cultural experiences, language classes, research and consulting.
“Using my marketing and digital expertise, I supported them to strengthen their marketing and website capability to increase the visibility of the Gujaga Foundation and its auspice organisation, the Coastal Sydney and Illawarra Traditional Owner Aboriginal Corporation.
“My project focused on a refresh of their website. Following that, I facilitated a handover so they can continue to update the website into the future and promote their work.
“I’ve been really inspired by the young leaders in La Perouse and all the incredible work they’re doing to support their community. It’s given me a lot to learn from, and I’ve been able to bring back skills and insights into how I work within the Westfield Knox and wider team and how we support our own community.
“It was such a fulfilling opportunity. I would tell anyone interested in a secondment to do it. As long as you’re open to learning, you will leave any secondment with heart-warming memories for life.”
