Embodied carbon is the greenhouse gas emissions associated with materials and construction processes throughout the life cycle of a building.
We acknowledge that decision making in the early planning and design phases for our Westfield destinations can greatly influence future carbon outcomes.
Embodied Carbon is one of our Sustainable Development and Design Principles that will guide our decision making related to projects, the procurement of materials, the use of energy and the overall intention to reduce the impact of our actions on the environment.
Our approach to embodied carbon is focused on reducing the environmental impacts of our projects by building: less, light, efficiently, low carbon and for the future. Our strategy will be supported by the completion of Life Cycle Assessments across our future major projects.
We will also work to understand the materiality of embodied carbon and Scope 3 emissions for our future developments and commence measurement.
In addition, we recognise the role we play in the value chain of our business partners and continue to discuss store designs and fit outs, the role of sustainable materials choices and circularity in design phases, and how we can enable their sustainability endeavours.
We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and communities of the lands on which our business operates.
—We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and to their Elders past and present.
—We recognise the unique role of Māori as Tangata Whenua of Aotearoa/New Zealand.
